Sh*t of the Week

CARACAS (Reuters) - Congress passed President Hugo Chavez's proposal to scrap presidential term limits on Friday in a package of constitutional changes that Venezuelans are likely to approve in a referendum next month.

Pro-Chavez lawmakers, who dominate the legislature, shouted "yes, yes," and chanted the president's political slogan "Fatherland, socialism or death" in approving the measures.

Wait a bloody second!

Haven't we been here before? Isn't this in Chapter One of Totalitarianism for Dummies?

I was never really 'on' Mr Chavez, but I've gone right off him now. I remember somebody else who ran a National Socialist party who 'convinced' the parliament to waive certain leadership limitations. Look what happened after that mess?

I know I wrote a long article about how he wasn't really all that bad, but Mr Chavez is running some horrible parallels with the man voted Time Magazine Man of the Year back in the thirties (you know, before he flattened Europe and exterminated twelve million inconvenient people.)

Appealing to the rough-and-ready great unwashed, laying claim to the nation's assets and now f*cking about with the constitution. Next out of the window, I reckon, is democracy - and he'll no doubt follow that up with a big push for rearmament (you know, just to kick-start the economy) and continue making more of all those delightful chums he's got (like that scumbag in Iran.)

Nope, Chavez has just toddled off the end of the plank as far as my benefit-of-the-doubt goes.
